Work in Progress

This gallery records the tapestries as they are made, showing the progress of the work as it develops.

The work showing at the moment is "Lace 2". This tapestry is the largest fine work that I have ever made and will most likely take about 18 months to weave.

'"Lace 2"'
2005 -
1200 x 1800mm
This tapestry is a portrait of my youngest daughter Elissa. It is the second in a series of 'Lace' portraits the first being a commissioned portrait of Sue Spigel's daughter, Bessie.
I have always wanted to weave a large fine tapestry and this one is 'it'. The sett is 13epi using a 12/6 warp cotton and wool, cotton and silk in the weft. The image was created on the computer using Photoshop and it consists of two images, one of Elissa and the other of a budding magnolia tree. The images were manipulated to create this strikiing design. I am weaving the tapestry on its side so that when it hangs the warp will be lying horizontally.

1200 x 1800mm
The tapestry was started last year and there is 8 weeks weaving in the work so far. It has been on hold for the last 5 months while I have been working on a commissioned tapestry. Almost ready to start work on this tapestry again.

'Marilyn at work on 'Lace 2''
2006

This photo of me working on the tapestry, was taken by two Aussie visitors to my studio, Jenny Slocombe and George Short. It is so nice when visitors send me photographs that they have taken. I thought this one was good enough to add to the site.

''The Picnic'
2006

This tapestry is a family work featuring my son Michael's children having a picnic lunch. The image is a lovely one that I have simplified on the computer, changed the colours away from natural colours. I am feeling quite happy with the result and it is weaving well.
